Get Mad and Do Something!

Hey Neergs--
I don't know about you, but I sometimes feel helpless about the Gulf disaster. Today I read about oil getting into crab larvae and other areas of our food chain like plankton feeders--the food of other fish that we eat! Scientists are saying that it is going to take more than months, likely years to fix this mess. I'm starting to wonder if it's even worse than the the experts say. Maybe they don't even know. What I do know is that crying about it isn't going to help. I do think spreading the word will help. I talk to friends and their parents who don't spend much time thinking about the Gulf. They feel that it doesn't affect them directly, so they push it out of their mind. They aren't bad people, they just worry about other things, like our economy and paying the bills and stuff. I understand this, but I don't think they realize what an enormous impact this will also have on our economy. This oil spill is going to affect many industries including our food supply. There are also enormous implications that this oil will make its way up the east coast. Maybe if it hit New York, people would take some notice. I don't wish this on anyone, but I think the major media channels are doing a crummy job of covering the spill. This spill is the biggest news story of our generation and it should be front and center. So Neergs, it's up to us to keep this story in the headlines. Talk to your friends, their parents...anyone who'll listen. Tell them how you feel about this tragedy and why they should care. Donate your time and your money. Get creative. I just saw this story on CNN about this girl who is selling her paintings of birds to raise over $110,000 to help birds hurt by the oil spill in the Gulf. How cool is that? Olivia Bouler is our Neerg of the Day! What can you do to help? Again, please send us any pictures or video about the Gulf oil spill. We want to share them!
