Under: Vote for Green
Hey Neergs--
Hope you had time to join us last week as we learned more about Esben and Karsten's amiiko website. We were amazed by the statistics and the impact of consumerism on our planet. We learned that voting with our wallets and buying green is not enough--we need to kick it up a notch and research "fair trade" products. It is the socially responsible thing to do. We also learned that real sustainability is about zero waste. A new model for businesses called "cradle to cradle" is a very optimistic operating model, but is critical to our planet's well being. If I've learned anything from Karsten and Esben, it's the message of optimism. We can't throw in the towel. We are not powerless. We wield a lot more influence than we know. When asked what parting comments they had for us Neergs, Esben and Karsten had this to say, "Talk to your parents and make them listen."
They couldn't be more right. Your parents love you and care about what you think. I know that it's frustrating not to be able to vote on issues that affect our generation so critically, but we will have our chance. In the meantime, we need to speak up and affect the vote of "green candidates" right now. Tomorrow is election day. There are tons of websites you can research to discover the environmentally responsible candidates in you area. Here are some good ones to try: www.gp.org, www.newmenu.org, and http://www.energyindependentcongress.us/. Now roll up you sleeves and go to work! Share your recommendations with your family. Tell them why they need to vote for these candidates and why it's important to you.
What's at risk? There is a powerful article in the Los Angeles Times today. The GOP (Republican party) is already licking their chops. They are planning a full scale attack to delay, reverse and end regulations that would reduce greenhouse gases. They are specifically focused on EPA efforts to reduce automotive emissions and carbon emissions from utilities. We have a war on our hands. We cannot let corporations and the officials they finance to undo so much progress. I hope the world is watching closely and keeps the pressure on the United States. For us kids, there has never been a more important time to support green candidates and sustainability issues. Talk to your parents...and make them listen!
In honor of our "trash to treasure" post, I found this goodie! Watch and enjoy!
Peace Out--Ethan
